Monkton Farleigh Ammunition Depot and Mines

Part Four

Heading out of the mine.

Joy!

It was easy to forget that we were deep underground as we explored the rooms in "Main West".

Dead equipment.

Heading back to the tunnel.

A very helpful note: "VERY LONG TUNNEL. 1.5 MILES. DON'T BOTHER!!!"

Climbing back into the tunnel.

These pictures give a better impression of how dark it was down there.

At the conveyor motor and controls, half way down the tunnel.

Graffiti from WWII. Note the dates, (41 & 42), and the name of Corporal, (Cpl), Hill.

Number of days spent working there?

More names from WWII.

Despite their rusted appearance, most of the bearings in the rollers still worked perfectly.

To prove to the boys just how good 1940's engineering was, I decided to sit on a metal door and ride down the slope!

I think the face says it all! The rollers worked a lot better than I thought they would, and I zipped along at a terrific speed.
